Looking back at the Christmas Market

I had been to Europe before, but never to Germany. Eric had traveled several times and this was our “home finding“ trip. We had just about a week to get everything signed, planned, and coordinated. The biggest tasks were school appointments for the kids, paperwork for the apartment, and establishing a banking account. We were fortunate in that Eric had located an available apartment through a work colleague, so we weren’t stressed on our visit about finding a place to live as well. (The housing situation here is awful for everyone: potential tenants, landlords, and agents. There are way too many people looking for housing and not enough places. Each property listing can be like a feeding frenzy and very stressful.)
Because we knew where we were going to live, I was able to book a lovely little hotel in our new neighborhood. That meant that we could really check out the local scene...and the local Christmas Markets! I was in love! Music and laughter and treats and singing and roasted chestnuts and glühwein (warm spiced wine)! There a dozens of varieties of the drink and several things you can add to your drink too, if you want an extra kick. Each of the stands in the markets has their own recipe and each is unique. You go to any stand and buy a souvenir cup and get refills from other vendors too for a lesser price. Then, when you are done, you can keep the mug or turn it back in and get money back. I also have to add that I found some delicious gluten free sweets in a local bakery (but that will have to be another post)! All in all, I think the whole Christmas season here in Germany is not to be missed. And I already look forward to sharing it all with family and friends!
Smiles and Blessings! ~ Shannon
